HOW NEW YORK TAXES WORK

What comes out of a New York paycheck

New York uses progressive income tax brackets that start at 4% and reach 10.9% for the highest incomes. Employees also pay Paid Family Leave and Disability Insurance premiums, which are included in this calculator.

PROGRESSIVE TAX · 4% – 10.9%

State brackets plus PFL and DBL

New York tax starts at 4% and climbs through several brackets. PFL and DBL are separate after-tax premiums. New York City residents owe an additional city income tax that is not part of this calculator.

LOCAL RULES

New York City and Yonkers taxes

The calculator covers New York State, PFL and DBL. If you live in New York City or Yonkers, your real paycheck is lower than the state-only estimate.

New York City resident tax

New York City residents pay a city income tax on top of the state tax. The rate is modest at low incomes and rises to 3.876% at higher levels, so city residents should subtract it separately.

Yonkers surcharge

Yonkers residents pay a surcharge on their New York State tax rather than a separate city tax. The surcharge is calculated on the state liability.

PFL and DBL

Paid Family Leave and Disability Insurance are included here as after-tax deductions. They do not reduce federal or state taxable income, but they do reduce net pay.

STATE TAX COST

What New York income tax costs vs Texas

Texas has no wage income tax, so the gap below is what New York takes for state income tax plus payroll insurance at each salary, while federal income tax and FICA stay the same.

PLANNING NOTES

Money moves for a New York paycheck

State-specific points that change the number at the bottom of your check.

NYC residents: add the city tax

The city income tax reaches 3.876% and is not in this state-only estimate. Subtract it separately if you live in the five boroughs.

Review PFL and DBL lines

Both are after-tax premiums. They reduce net pay but do not lower your federal or New York taxable wages.

Part-year residents file IT-203

If you moved into or out of New York during the year, you likely need a part-year return to allocate income.

STATE CONTEXT

Working in New York: what to expect

New York has two very different labor markets. New York City salaries are higher, but housing, commuting and the city income tax reduce the advantage. Upstate metros such as Buffalo, Rochester and Albany offer lower costs and the same state tax rules.

The state brackets are progressive, but the jump between 5.5% and 6% happens at a relatively low income, so middle earners feel the state tax quickly. At very high incomes the 9.65% and 10.9% brackets apply to large portions of pay.

New York taxes remote work based on where the employee is located, with limited exceptions. If you live outside the state but work for a New York employer, confirm the withholding arrangement with payroll.

FAQ

Common New York paycheck questions

What is the New York state income tax rate?+
New York uses progressive brackets from 4% to 10.9%. Most middle-income workers pay between 5% and 6.85% on the bulk of their taxable income.
Do New York City residents pay an extra tax?+
Yes. New York City residents pay a city income tax in addition to the state tax, with rates up to 3.876%. This calculator does not include the city tax.
What are PFL and DBL on a New York paycheck?+
Paid Family Leave and Disability Insurance are employee premiums withheld after income tax. Both are included in this calculator and reduce net pay without lowering taxable wages.
Does New York tax remote work?+

How does New York compare with Florida or Texas?+

Do I need to file a New York return if I worked there part of the year?+
Usually yes. Part-year residents and nonresidents who worked in New York generally file an IT-203 return to report New York-source income and claim withholding.
