What comes out of a California paycheck
California uses a progressive income tax with brackets that climb from 1% to 13.3%. Employees also pay State Disability Insurance, which is withheld after income tax and is included in this calculator.
Progressive brackets plus SDI
California tax rises with income, so the effective rate on a $75,000 salary is far below the 13.3% top rate. SDI is a separate 1.3% employee premium in 2026 with no wage cap.
Where a California paycheck goes
- Federal income tax$9,870
- FICA$6,503
- CA State Disability Insurance$1,105
- California income tax$3,828
- Take-home pay$63,694
California combines progressive brackets with a separate SDI premium, so the state portion is larger than in flat-tax states.

- $20/hr · $41,600/yr≈ $16.47/hr net
- $32/hr · $66,560/yr≈ $25.25/hr net
- $50/hr · $104,000/yr≈ $36.08/hr net
SDI and California income tax apply at every hourly rate, so the net hourly figure is lower than the gross rate suggests.

California local taxes and SDI details
California has no local personal income tax, but the state disability premium and high brackets change the math for every worker.
State Disability Insurance
SDI is included in this calculator at 1.3% of gross wages for 2026. It funds paid family leave and disability benefits and is withheld after income tax.
No local income tax
California cities and counties do not impose a personal income tax. San Francisco does have an employer payroll expense tax, but it is not withheld from employee paychecks.
High earners
The top 13.3% rate includes the 1% mental health services tax on taxable income above $1 million. Very high earners should plan for the additional Medicare tax as well.
What California income tax costs vs Texas
Texas has no wage income tax, so the gap below is what California takes for state income tax plus payroll insurance at each salary, while federal income tax and FICA stay the same.
| Gross salary | Take-home in California | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| $60,000 | $47,808 | −$2,582 |
| $85,000 | $63,694 | −$4,933 |
| $120,000 | $84,607 | −$8,643 |
| $200,000 | $131,804 | −$17,123 |
State income tax and any state payroll insurance are included.
California net pay by filing status and pay frequency
California figures use the same $85,000 salary, the $5,540 standard deduction, and no pre-tax deductions. Married figures assume a joint return with one income.
| Filing status | Take-home / yr | Per check |
|---|---|---|
| Single | $63,694 | $2,450 |
| Married filing jointly | $69,868 | $2,687 |
How often you are paid
- Weekly (52/yr)$1,225
- Bi-Weekly (26/yr)$2,450
- Semi-Monthly (24/yr)$2,654
- Monthly$5,308

Confirm SDI on your stub
SDI is 1.3% of gross wages in 2026 with no wage cap. It should appear as a separate after-tax line.
Plan for RSUs and bonuses
Equity and bonus income can push you into a higher California bracket. Supplemental withholding may not match your final liability.
Track days worked elsewhere
California taxes wages for work performed in the state. If you split time with another state, keep a workday log.
Working in California: what to expect
California salaries are often higher than the national average, but so is the cost of living. The Bay Area and coastal Southern California are the most expensive markets, while the Central Valley and inland regions are considerably cheaper.
Because the income tax is progressive, the difference between a $60,000 and a $120,000 salary is much larger than the difference in bracket rates suggests. The calculator shows the annual tax and the per-paycheck effect.
California can tax wages for work physically performed in the state, even for an out-of-state employer. Remote workers who split time between states should track where they actually work.
